Prehistoric Temples of Malta Tour

3. Prehistoric Temples of Malta Tour

Take this 5-hour archaeological tour and travel back to prehistoric times at Hagar Qim, Mnajdra, and the Ghar Dalam cave and museum in Malta. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Megalithic Temples of Malta date back 5,500 years and are the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world. Continue to the fragile temples of Hagar Qim, located on a ridge capped in soft globigerina limestone on the southern edge of Malta. You will also explore the neighboring Mnajdra temples, which are considered possibly the best example of Maltese megalithic architecture still standing. The surrounding area is typical of Mediterranean garrigue (low level scrub) in its starkness, and has been designated as a Heritage Park. A few hundred meters from the temple you will discover the Hamrija Tower, one of the 13 watchtowers built by Grand Master Martin de Redin, one of the legendary Knights of Malta.

Malta: Blue Grotto, Dingli, Rabat, Mdina, Ta Qali & Mosta

4. Malta: Blue Grotto, Dingli, Rabat, Mdina, Ta Qali & Mosta

The tour begins on the south-western coast of Malta, and the first stop is at Blue Grotto, which is located not far from Wied iż-Żurrieq and is known for its entrancing waters. If the weather cooperates, visitors can take part in a traditional boat ride that lasts for 15 minutes and costs a nominal fee. After that, we go on to the magnificent Dingli Cliffs, which offer a sweeping view of the Mediterranean Sea as well as the minuscule deserted islet of Filfla, which is located approximately 5 kilometres off the coast of Malta. After that, we make our way up the hill to the ancient town of Rabat, which is known for its historic churches, Roman catacombs, and winding labyrinthine streets. A trip to the fortified mediaeval city of Mdina, which served as the capital of Malta in times past, is also scheduled. The "Silent City," as it is more commonly known, has a population of barely 250 people today, yet it is home to some of the most magnificent palaces on the island, which are owned by ancient noble families. If you are interested, we will have ample time here to try some of the local specialties, including the food and the wine. We make our way inland to see the Ta' Qali Crafts Village and National Park. This area is home to some of the finest examples of Maltese handicrafts, including  ceramics, glass-blowing, and work with filigree and semiprecious stones. This is your opportunity to purchase some handcrafted trinkets of high quality. The tour comes to a close in the town of Mosta, which is famous for its basilica. The basilica is also referred to as "The Rotunda," and it features one of the largest unsupported domes in the world. It is included to pick you up and drop you off at your hotel or location.

Half-Day Tour of Mosta, Ta'Qali Crafts Village & Mdina

5. Half-Day Tour of Mosta, Ta'Qali Crafts Village & Mdina

Visit three of Malta's most distinct attractions on this half-day tour in the heart of the island. Explore the town of Mosta and stop in at the Church of St. Mary, which features one of the largest domes in the world. On April 9, 1942 a German bomb pierced the dome and fell among a congregation of more than 300 people, but did not explode. The event has become legendary, with many regarding it as a miracle. A replica of the bomb can be seen in the church's sacristy. Then visit the nearby village of Ta'Qali, where a former British military outpost has been converted into handicraft workshops. Here you can watch local artisans at work blowing elaborate glass art pieces, intricately assembling silver filigree jewelery, and carving local limestone. Finish with a visit to Mdina, Malta's ancient capital and one of the world's best medieval fortifications. Admire panoramic views of the entire Maltese landscape, and visit St. Paul's Cathedral ̶ built on the site where governor Publius was reported to have met St. Paul following his shipwreck off the Maltese coast.

The isolated Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene on the towering rocks makes for a charming landmark. Built in the 17th century, the chapel offers some of the most stunning views in Malta, including to the tiny uninhabited islet of Filfla. The guide Mario was experienced and knowledgable. Easy to listen too I was impressed with his English. For his information the rock is a limestone and there were veins of quartz. There were people on the tour convinced the colours were paintings!! A good tour I just a little disappointed out return journey was on a dilapidated bus with missing seats!

I had bought the tickets online, I left at 14.00 on Sunday and I visited the northern area of Malta by minibus, the next morning I visited the southern area. I was able to tour almost all of Malta in 24 hours. I recommend it!

This trip was fantastic, well worth the money. our guide was very informative as we walked around senglea. The winery was good with 3 wines to try and a traditional Maltese buffet

Picked up from our hotel on time. Separate guide for English/French and German/Italian. Good information about the cities and a nice wine tasting with local delicacies.

Mark, our guide, was very knowledgeable and friendly!
