Full description

Enjoy a physical challenge with rewarding views on this guided climb to the top of Etna. Ride the cable car then trek to the summit. Take breaks along the way and capture unique photos of the summit craters.

Meet your guide in Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza. After getting your equipment and enjoying an initial briefing, begin your hike to the top of Mount Etna at 3,300 meters. Take the cable car to quickly get up to an altitude of 2,500 meters, then a special 4x4 bus to 2,900 meters, near Torre del Filosofo.

From there, start the 2-hour ascent, taking intermediate breaks to enjoy the views during the trek. Walk through the lunar-looking lava fields that will lead you right to the summit of Etna: the highest active volcano in Europe. Admire the peculiar features that characterize the summit area.

Begin the descent through fun sands. Visit Mount Etna's Barbagallo flank craters and a lava flow channel. Finally, take the cable car downhill again to return to the starting point.

I highly recommend using Ashàra as an Etna outfitter: they offered proper hiking boots (you won't want to over-work your sneakers), coats (if you forgot to bring an extra layer), and treking poles. They also got us going early enough to get ahead of the crowds. Massimo was our guide, and offered the perfect balance of safety, education, adventure, and playfulness. He never hesitated to respond to a question from the group, and always checked-in on the group as we made our way up Etna.

The guide is always important on trips like this. Max (I think he was called) was enthusiastic, keen to share knowledge and experience, kept focus on the group (speed and happy factor). He was also funny and answered any question like he would answer a dozen more if you asked. The span of the walk was extensive. Fortunately we were a “good" group and “actual” walking time was actually 4hours 43minutes (other time was talks and lunch etc). That's a challange that I found very fulfilling, particularly since we saw so many different craters and aspects of the mountain. Unforgettable "adventure"
