Waterford: House of Waterford Crystal Factory Tour

2. Waterford: House of Waterford Crystal Factory Tour

The House of Waterford Crystal Tour is more than a factory visit. We take you on a journey into the world of crystal. You’ll see each stage of the process that goes into making these pieces of art. We start in the history room, tracing Waterford Crystal from its birth. This part of the site features detailed exhibits of the firm’s development, and you’ll see some of their great antique pieces on display here. You’ll then proceed to the mold room, where wooden molds and hand tools are still used by master blowers to shape the molten crystal. From here we move on to the blowing room, where you’ll watch as craftsmen transform glowing balls of molten crystal into elegant shapes. In the cutting department, master craftsmen use industrial diamond-tipped wheels to cut the crystal. The diamond wheel ensures a high quality cut to the crystal. The last two stages of the process involve sculpting and engraving, and are arguably the most precision-based stages in the creation of a piece of Waterford Crystal. Your tour ends with a visit to the retail shop, where you’ll see the largest display of Waterford Crystal in the world.

We loved our Rail Tours excursion! Our tour guide Terence reserved seats on the train, so all we had to do was show up. We stopped at the Bunratty Castle first, which we really enjoyed. We learned about the history of the castle, the Vikings and their banquets, the status of women at the time, and the reasons the castle was built narrowly and with many hidden rooms. We even got to see an actual dungeon. Our lunch at Joseph McHugh’s was great. We all loved our traditional Irish lunches. When we arrived at the Cliffs, we had plenty of time. We were there during a windy day, so one area was blocked off, but we still got the full beautiful experience. After, we experienced the Wild Atlantic Way route, which was very scenic. We drove through the Burren and Galway Bay, but were unable to stop due to the rain that made it unsafe. Then our brief but lovely stop in Galway we enjoyed a great dinner at An Púcán. The train ride back was smooth and easy. Overall a great day, highly recommend!

I am irish and have been to these places many times throughout childhood. However my 6 year old son and husband (who is American) have not. I picked this railtours as it was great value for money and we could see lots without having to rent a car or book accommodation and it was also child friendly. The guide was great he had loads of knowledge ,and we got to see loads in one day! I'm also 6 months pregnant, and it was great that there was loads of time to rest between each excursion due to the coaches and the time being allocated well at each place we visited. Every route the driver took had lots to see along the way also and the tour guide filled in about lots of the history. As someone who's irish, it's great to go on a tour that presents ireland in a way that made me proud and I'll recommend railtours to family and friends. Go raibh maith agat agus beannachtaí !

The trip is very good. super complete. You can not ask for more. We bought food the day before and thus we took advantage of the moment of the excursion. In Galway an hour and a half. And in the cliffs an hour and a half. Everything more than good.

Noel was a very knowledgeable guide who made the tour interesting & engaging due, in part, to being a local and tying things back to his upbringing in the city.

John was great and made the tour more fun! Definitely worth every penny.
