Funchal: Wine and Sugar Walking Tour
- Small group
- Duration: 2 hours
Join a former student of the University of Madeira, or a volunteer of the university's Erasmus Madeiran Heritage program, and get fascinating explanations about the cultural history of the island and its importance to the historical trade routes of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Learn more about some of the famous visitors to Madeira and what they contributed to the island. Explore the wine-making industry and its impact on global history, and visit emblematic buildings, such as the 15th-century Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption. Go to the Old Customs House, built at the height of Madeira's importance to the sugar industry, and discover one of the oldest tourist centers.
We really enjoyed our walking tour, however their was very little reference to the wine and sugar trade within Madeira in the past. We were also very disappointed not to be able to visit the Jesuit community.

We had a really interesting guided tour in the old town of Funchal. We would highly recommend it. We actually booked the tour “Wine and Sugar”. Apparently we were just put together with the other leadership. Not a problem for us, but still not right.
Very interesting tour by Polish student, who had a good knowledge of the subject and who also clearly enjoyed seeing tourists from different countries.
We enjoyed our guided tour very much. Our guide was very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I would thoroughly recommend this tour!
Helen led us (couple with baby) through zur Streets of Funchal for 2 hrs and it never got boring.
