  • Visit the remains of the ancient Roman Theater of Neapolis
  • Descend 40 meters below the historic center of Naples and discover a different world
  • See where Emperor Nero kept a private dressing room for his performances
Full description
Traveling back in time, you'll descend 40 meters below street level and emerge into the honeycombed underground of Naples and its haunting and mysterious history. On this 90-minute tour you'll see a few of the cavities excavated in the 4th century, and used as cisterns for the water supply of the city for nearly 23 centuries. The environment is spacious and illuminated, except for a short segment where there is an optional visit (each person is given a candle to light their own path). The walking surface is smooth and straight. See the air raid shelters from World War II, the War Museum, and the Hypogeum Gardens, as well as the Greek Roman aqueduct. You'll also visit the remains of the ancient Roman Theater of Neapolis, entering from the ground floor of a typical Neapolitan house. Emperor Nero kept a private dressing room here for the times he performed his shows in Naples. After this, if you have selected one of the options including a pizza, you will be lead on a short walk to the pizzeria.

There is a similar tour across the street so make sure you get to the right location. It was very popular so at least during high season and shoulder season I would not count on being able to get in if you show up without reservation. There is some phyiscal interpretation along the route to help imagine how construction took place. The use of the underground developments during WW II and relentless and devastating attacks on Naples was fascinating and sobering. An add-on visit to a recently discovered colosseum type development that is over a thousand years old underneath existing housing development was interesting also. Bring water. Lots of stairs up and down. Fun part of tour "spelunking" through walkways to see parts of the aqueduct system. It was very dark and narrow, but a highlight of the tour. The area around the tour entrance is a fun shopping, dining district.

Meet up directions were perfect. English was very good. The tour was supposed to start at 6pm, but started at 6:15pm. Nice tour to see what others cannot from the outside of Napoli, but it was rushed so as not to enjoy it as much. Lots of walking & stairs, so wear comfortable shoes. Very tight spaces to get through, about 1 foot at times. Nice little excursion to go on.

Exploring the underground of Naples was amazing! I wasn't particularly fond of the tight, dark tunnel but seeing the aqueduct and some of the things left behind was cool. I was really intrigued to learn that some of the modern buildings and structures were actually built over ruins. The only thing I was not pleased with was that i had paid for the underground tour AND the pizza. After the tour, we went to the pizza shop that was supposed to take the voucher and apparently they were closed to the public until 7pm. (The hours of operation for the pizza shop was not listed when booking the excursion and maybe should be so others in similar situations will be aware of) Because I was in Naples on a cruise ship, there was no way that I could've stayed around that late to be able to get the pizza. I was able to find another local spot though and that pizza was delicious with fresh ingredients.
