Enjoy the Lisbon Tile Museum featuring decorative ceramic tiles or azulejos from the second half of the 15th century to the present day. The museum beside tiles, includes ceramics, porcelain, and faience from the 17th to the 21th century. The permanent exhibition starts with a display of the materials and techniques used for manufacturing tiles. After this brief introduction, the exhibition route follows a chronological order. The National Tile Museum was established in 1965 and became a National Museum in 1980. It is located in the former Convent of Madre Deus, founded by Queen D. Leonor in 1509. The Museum went through different building campaigns that involved transformations such as in its 16th-century mannerist cloister; the church which is decorated with remarkable sets of paintings and tiles; the sacristy featuring a Brazilian wood display cabinet and carved wood frames with paintings; the high choir with rich carved giltwood embellishments; the Chapel of Saint Anthony with an 18th-century Baroque decoration and a significant number of canvases by the painter André Gonçalves.

The beautiful Azulejo tiles you see in Lisbon and around Portugal are the result of an art form with a long history in the country that began during the Arabic occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. You’ll begin this 8-hour tour heading south of Lisbon to the beautiful Azeitão region, where you’ll visit the well-known Azulejos de Azeitão workshop. Learn how the tiles have been made over the years, as old techniques are still used to replicate centuries-old art. After learning the basics about the art, you’ll have a chance to paint your own tile, which will be baked later and sent to your hotel in Lisbon, or back home if your prefer (cost of shipping not included). Art and culture. A wonderful day in a spectacular location full of incredible treasures and beauties. Every detail is cared for and refined. The restaurants inside are as expensive as it should be, given the location. The palace of Versailles deserves all its fame.
