From Munich: Neuschwanstein Castle Full-Day Trip

Discover one of Bavaria's most scenic landscapes on this tour from Munich by train and van. Marvel at the stature and delicate architecture of Neuschwanstein Castle standing proud atop a hill and surrounded by forested mountains. See the sprawling valley from the foot of the castle walls and learn about its history from your guide along a walking tour of the grounds. Located 2 hours from Munich, the enchanting old-world town of Füssen lies in the foothills of the Alps, framed by one of the most breathtaking natural settings in the world. Towering far above the village, seemingly sculpted out of the very mountains that rise magnificently to the heavens, is a sight made from the stuff of dreams: the fabulous and ethereal Neuschwanstein Castle. This glorious folly was built in the 19th-Century by the famed "mad" King Ludwig II, a man intoxicated by mythology and who himself became a legend. The shimmering white towers of the castle among the clouds are instantly recognizable to many who haven’t ever heard the name Neuschwanstein. It is the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle and is famous the world over as the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang castle. To visit it is to step inside a fairy tale. On this full-day tour from Munich, your guide will take you by train or bus and accompany you uphill to the castle’s lofty perch, where it sits gleaming above a spectacular panorama of mountains, lakes, and valleys. It’s not just about the castle – it’s also about its wonderful location. You will go to the best vantage points and explore the lake. If time and weather permits, you can even enjoy a swim. Get postcard-perfect views of the equally beautiful Hohenschwangau Castle, the waterfall gorge, and the stunning Marienbrücke Bridge, suspended high above it all. While you are marveling at the beauty, your guide will tell you the engaging story of King Ludwig’s renowned and tragic reign, his turbulent times, and of the obsession that drove him to build his fantasy castle in the mountains that ultimately destroyed him. If you choose to purchase a ticket on the day, skip the long lines for the separate internal tour of the king’s private chambers by a specialist castle guide. The tour is the most practical way to admire this amazing fantasy world.

What people are saying about Neuschwanstein Castle

Overall rating

4.5
(6,620 reviews)

We had an amazing time on this tour! Everything was well-organized, and seeing the castles while learning about Bavarian history was a fantastic experience. The bus was very comfortable; we chose the regular option instead of the premium. Apart from the premium having a larger, more luxurious bus, the experience felt the same. Since you're only on the bus for about 4 hours total, the regular option is great and saves money! The weather was perfect—snowy and sunny at the same time, which made for stunning photos. We loved Linderhof Castle the most with its gold details and regal vibe. Neuschwanstein, while iconic, had a more rustic timber interior that reminded me of my grandfather’s house. Both are worth seeing, but Linderhof stood out. At Neuschwanstein, you can take a horse-drawn carriage (€8, 30-minute wait) or walk—good grip shoes are a must as some areas are slippery. Overall, the day was incredible, and this tour is absolutely worth it! Highly recommend!

Perfect and punctual excursion. Snowy fairytale places and excellent organization. Fairly short tours of the interiors, but very clear instructions on the organization of the day, with translation into several languages. Our guide was very kind and always made sure that we all understood the instructions and told us many interesting curiosities about Ludwig's life. For those who take this trip in the winter, however, I absolutely recommend waterproof shoes or boots, the road to Linderhof Castle is quite slippery with snow. There is time for lunch before the visit to the castle, but I would recommend taking something quick: the view along the road to Neuschwanstein (40 min walk) is wonderful in this period, it is worth taking it slowly and enjoying the landscape.

I chose the excursion so that my husband, who is German, would understand what was being said and understandable speech for himself. Alas, but something went wrong... We were given a tablet and one headphone for two. The left ear listened to German, the right to English (the guide's), but in general, if you put aside these little things, everything is ok!!!

Ursula was amazing; knowledgeable and entertaining...we learned so much from her and she is a major reason why the day was so fantastic.

A beautiful trip very well organized, the castles are very beautiful
