Full description
For over 200 years, the catacombs of the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, located in Little Italy, have served as the final resting place for the faithful departed. This unique and historic place has been a silent witness to the many struggles and accomplishments of prominent New York Catholics. With your guide, you’ll gain exclusive access to off-limits areas, including two walled cemeteries. Experience the only active catacombs in New York augmented with multimedia.   See where bishops rest alongside noteworthy New Yorkers who have played defining roles in Catholic, New York, and American History. This labyrinth of vaults belongs largely to bankers, lawyers, captains of industry, merchants, political candidates, and even to a Civil War-era general. The Delmonico Family, General Thomas Eckert, and the first resident Bishop of New York are only a few of the many resting peacefully in the crypts beneath the nave of this historic landmark church.

My sister and I went to New York and saw an ad about the catacombs tour. We decided to try it out and were able to get tickets for the next day. It was easy to buy the tickets online. Leo was our guide for our tour and he did an excellent job. So many interesting people are buried there and I loved hearing about the history behind their stories. The tour takes about 90 minutes but is not stressful or difficult to do. The cathedral is beautiful and I loved learning the differences between a cemetery and a graveyard, and why this church is a basilica. Very interesting tour and well worth the money.

The portion of the tour in the catacombs was loaded with history. I was expecting to see some skulls and bones which now I realize was unrealistic. All the tombs are sealed and the guide explains the deceased prominence in the community. The church tour was more than what I expected. The craftsmanship of stained glass, the altar and statues is something I really enjoyed. The organ viewing, you walk through it, is great to see how things were built back then. Very rugged. I never knew how militant Catholics were at the time the church was constructed and how they had to defend themselves. The history of those times must hold a lot of good stories.
