What people are saying about Oaxaca de Juarez
I would recommend this tour/workshop to anyone visiting Oaxaca. You are driven to a small town 40 minutes from the city and visit a alebrije-making workshop. There you are given a tour and shown the different stages that it takes to make these iconic and colorful Mexican art pieces. It was so interesting and eye-opening to see just how talented the artists are and how much work (time) goes into making the alebrije figures. When it’s time for you to paint your own you truly realize the skill set that is required to make the artworks. Painting your own alebrije was super fun! You get to pick your own small piece and are helped by one of the resident artists. At the end you end up with a unique souvenir. You can also buy more professionally made pieces there, which make a great gift for friends and family.
A truly magical experience from the moment Marcos, who was our guide and driver, narrated the traditions of Oaxacan families along the way to David's Fantastic Animals Workshop. For my family it was incredible to be able to translate everything they had learned prior to the alebrije class into a piece of wood that my daughters decorated in her class with the teacher Ana, who has been decorating these works of art for 2 years. David's workshop is a true work of art all full of color and history.
The painting experience was fun, but we were expecting to hear more about the history of the art. Also, because we asked, we learned more about the school where we did the painting, but it should have been part of the introduction before we got started.
This was a wonderful tour! Our driver was so courageous, friendly and knowledgeable. The small community we visited was spectacular. Beautiful art and people. We learned a ton and had fun painting. (The mezcal helped!) Highly recommended!!!
We enjoyed learning the history about the alebrijes and we have so much respect for the artists who create them! It takes a community effort to create something so meaningful and beautiful!
