Santorini is a small, circular archipelago of volcanic islands in the southern Aegean Sea, approximately 200 kilometers south of Greece's mainland. It was previously known as Kallisti, Strongili, or Thera. Santorini is the world's only inhabitable Caldera (volcano cauldron). Unlike other Greek islands, the towns and villages sit densely on top of the Caldera's massive cliffs, resembling snow on the towering mountain peaks from a distance. The colored layers of the volcanic rock of these cliffs are spectacular in their own right: cocoa brown, rust red, yellow ochre, white, and cream.
