1. Excursion to Ribeira Sacra + Ourense from Santiago
On the banks of the rivers Miño and Sil, we will discover one of the most unique places in Galicia: the Ribeira Sacra. Let its centuries-old vineyards and the charms of the Romanesque captivate you. We will depart from Santiago at 8.15 a.m towards the north of the province of Ourense. We will start our guided tour of the Ribeira Sacra. This name comes from the Middle Ages, a time when numerous monasteries were distributed on the slopes of these landscapes. We will begin our adventure by taking a catamaran that will carry us upstream through the spectacular canyons of the river Sil. This hour-and-a-half ride will take us into the deepest and most characteristic landscape of this area inland Galicia. On the boat we will have the chance to taste a typical wine of the area, well known for its certificate of origin. At the end of the ride, we will go to one of the viewpoints that surround the Ribeira Sacra to see the immensity of its landscape from a vantage point. Our next stop will be the impressive Monastery of San Pedro de Rocas, a unique architectural symbol of the Ribeira Sacra located in the heart of this region. The legend tells us that during the Sixth Century the ancient monastery was founded by hermits, but today we can find a particular church constructed into the rocks, graves different from those we can imagine and a whole series of architectural elements that will not leave us indifferent. After this stop, we will continue to the city of Ourense, which is known for being the thermal capital of Galicia and the most important city located at the entrance of the Ribeira Sacra. In Ourense we will have free time for lunch. In the afternoon, we will visit the historic center of the city and we will stroll through its cobbled streets and find out why it is known as the city of bridges. We will be back in Santiago around 7.00 p.m.
