Full description

Immerse yourself in the history of Crete and visit one of the most famous archeological sites. The Minoan Palace of Knossos, first built in 2000 B.C., was the residence of the legendary King Minos. The building, with an estimated 1,300-1,400 rooms, was excavated around 1900 by Sir Arthur Evans and partially reconstructed. Afterwards, embark on a short journey into more recent history and discover the old town of Heraklion with the well-known Morosini Fountain in Lions Square, the Loggia and St. Mark's Basilica.

Immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere, hike through the narrow streets, visit the market, browse the local shops, or visit the Venetian port with its fortress. Explore small parks, street cafés, and many historical buildings and fountains from Venetian and Turkish times. After visiting the excavation site see a very special performance. Once more experience Minoan culture with 3D video and traditional dancers wearing original costumes.

Eat small appetizers prepared according to traditional Minoan recipes to bring history back to life.

very good

Overall good; good and competent tour guide with detailed information; Knossos is a must in Crete, but it is very crowded there (3,000 visitors per day). Therefore, the supporting program with the demonstrations and the slide show as well as the visit to the museum in Heraklion, where there is more time to take a closer look at certain things (e.g. a model of Knossos), is very well put together. There were problems because a fax, which should remind us of changed departure times, did not reach us at the hotel. But everyone was trying very hard to solve the problem.

It's perfectly alright

Some information about this tour, which may be useful: 1. The pick-up time can be very early. Our hotel is south of Agios Nikolaos and we were picked up at 6:20. The original plan was 8:00 am. In the end we were on the road for almost 13 hours. 2. The group can be very large. In our case there were over 50 people. Fortunately, audio systems have been around recently, otherwise you wouldn't have noticed anything from half of them. 3. There is little to eat. With allergies, it is therefore advisable to take something with you. The Minoan demonstration includes bread, dumplings, feta and olives, as well as watermelon and grapes for dessert. You have the opportunity to buy something later in Heraklion but then you will probably miss the museum. If our hotel hadn't provided us with the breakfast box enough, it would have been a hungry day. Positive: The tour management and the bus driver were very friendly and did their best.
