Full description
The Musée de l'Orangerie is an art gallery of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings located in the west corner of the Tuileries Gardens next to the Place de la Concorde in Paris. Though most famous for being the permanent home for eight Water Lilies murals by Claude Monet, the museum also contains works by Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri Rousseau, Alfred Sisley, Chaim Soutine and Maurice Utrillo, among others. The new layout of the Musée de l’Orangerie collection creates a closer connection between the two parts of the collection: Water Lilies and the École de Paris (School of Paris) in the early 20th century. It's an elegant, fluid, educational, and stimulating circuit for visitors. At the entrance to the collection, you'll see large polyptychs by Joan Mitchell (loan from the Musée national d’Art moderne) and large-scale works by the modern 'primitives' (Picasso, Douanier Rousseau, Derain, Modigliani, Matisse, etc.) The monographic galleries allow you to get a new, more up-close, and comfortable perspective of the works. Simply show your voucher directly at the dedicated entrance for visitors with pre-bought tickets. After a security check, you’ll be able to walk straight inside.

This is a great little museum that was chosen and built to house Monets large scale water lily paintings. He designed the rooms specifically for his paintings which have a slight curve to the canvas and frame that follow the curvature of the wall. It is especially nice if you have time to go to Giverny which can be reached by train to see gardens in juncture with this museum. It is very small and can be done in an hour to an hour and thirty minutes. In the basement there are more impressionists works by Cezanne, Renoir and others.

Good permanent and temporary exhibition Too bad that the day of my visit, last Sunday morning coincided with the arrival of the Tour de France in Paris, closure of the stations of the line 1 from the beginning of the morning and barricades for pedestrians including for access to the Tuileries Garden and the Orangerie Museum… galéré, obstacle course, especially for me who walks with a cane! Culture is not a priority over sporting events… To be transmitted to Roselyne Bachelot and Anne Hidalgo…

Definitely worth the skip the line ticket

Seeing Monet's 'Water Lilies" in 360 has been on my bucket list for years. I've passed the Orangerie several times on various trips to Paris and shook my head at the long lines. This was amazing. We were in so quickly. I loved and was pleasantly surprised by all the other paintings on exhibit as well: Cezane, Gaughin, Renoir, and more.
