    Paris is commonly known for its beauty and romance. However, far beneath the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre is an entirely different, intimidating world. In the Catacombs of Paris there is an inscription above a doorway that reads: Beware of the Realm of Death. This is a suitable warning to prepare you for a memorable, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Access to the Catacombs is extremely limited as only 200 people are allowed to enter the site at a time. Consequently, lines can be very long and waits can be up to 2 hours. Privileged, skip-the-line access lets you save time and energy to make the most out of this personalized visit. Nearly 300 kilometers of tunnels and narrow paths stretch below the streets of Paris. Originally, the Catacombs were limestone quarries, hollowed out for the construction of the most famous bridges and buildings in the city. Beginning in the 18th century, the Catacombs served as the final resting place for more than 6 million people, and skeletons, bones, and skulls of exhumed bodies neatly line the walls and arches.     Meet outside the catacombs by Denfert Rochereau. Your guide will wait for you at the entrance to the catacombs. The guide will hold a sign to draw attention to themselves. To reach the catacombs by Metro, take line 4 or line 6 to the Denfert-Rochereau stop and exit at Sortie 1. The entrance to the catacombs is directly across the street from this exit.

    • Given the nature of the Catacombs, the space is often wet, dirty, and a little slippery. It is also a cool 14 degrees Centigrade year-round. Be sure to dress appropriately

    This is a must see tour, especially if you have never visited catacombs before. The history is interesting and the guides were very knowledge, easy to understand, and entertaining. I have been to the catacombs in Italy and I'm still glad I came here because the history is very different than in Italy.

    Wonderful tour!! Our guide Randa was the absolute best. She knows her history and blew us away with all her stories and her humor (We all felt she was the best guide we’ve ever had in any city, EVER!) —this tour was worth every penny...splurge, especially if you have kids!!

    The catacombs werent as macabre as I was expecting. It’s a long and extremely narrow stairway down to the catacombs, it can be quite dizzying. The walk will be a tight squeeze once in the catacombs, if youre 6’2+ in height be prepared to have a neck massage after its all done. The guide my group had, Charles was amazing. A bevy of historical information is presented to you in such a manner that keeps you entertained. You’ll stop at hear little tid bits of info and get to take a couple of photos. You’ll find a few trail behinds (other tour explorers not with the group) so be mindful if you fall behind and end up following the wrong group. Other than that wear proper shoes, something comfy possibly boots or something you dont mind sullying as its wet and a little muddy down there. Not sure your beliefs, but while down there, there was minor para activity. At the end of the tour you’ll get to visit the gift shop. Tip your guide, they might be worth it.
