Full description

Transport yourself back to Roman times on a guided tour of Pompeii led by an archeologist. Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site for 2 hours with the help of your expert guide, who will take you around the city preserved by volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD. Choose the experience you would like to have, with the choice of either a shared small-group tour or a private tour for your and your group alone. Skip the line when you enter the city at Porta Marina Superiore, one of the ancient city’s 7 gates. Walk the main streets and wander around the Forum, the old heart of the city and the center of public life. From here you can see Mount Vesuvius overlooking the city. Discover highlights such as the basilica (business and legal center), thermal baths, temples, bakery and great Theater of Pompeii. Listen to interesting anecdotes from your archeological guide, who will tell you about people who lived in Pompeii.

Peek at plaster casts of those who were in the city at the time of the eruption. See well-maintained artworks, mosaics, and frescoes and travel back nearly 2000 years. Highlights include the House of the Vetti and the Lupanar Brothel.

Find out how this famous brothel got its name and see its preserved stone beds and frescoes. Get great tips from your guide at the end of the tour about how to spend the rest of your day, or even choose to stay inside the archeological site longer to explore on your own.

Get directions to the Sanctuary Dedicated to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, the local cathedral that is located close to the excavation site. You can also get directed to the Amphitheater and Orto dei Fuggiaschi.

A fantastic site and a great tour. Only frustration (besides the absolute buckets of rain) was that our guide, Paulo I think, didn't keep track of his group very well. My mother and I and another couple were slower and he often left without us, so much so that our radios would stop working. He was extremely knowledgeable, engaging and fun as a guide. So much great stuff to see, I can understand that he wanted us to see it all and that's why we often fell behind. In this instance, while were left behind, my mother slipped and fell off of one of the large stepping stones that cross the roads (which were gushing with water). Paulo never knew we'd had a problem. The tour would have been 5 stars despite the rain if he had looked after us a bit more. But his enthusiasm and obvious love for the subject matter was tangible. I would highly recommend this tour but be a bit wary if you have trouble on uneven surfaces or might have difficulty keeping up the fast pace.

Booked the archaeologist led tour, and PhD student Alexandra was informed and professional. She showed us main sights in group of 16, with earpieces, and then we had plenty of time to wander and see other things afterwards, as once you are on site there is no time slot to leave. Take food and drink as the only onsite restaurant has very long queues. We arrived by train, station only 2 minutes to meeting place. Professional outfit, would use them again

Could have been an 8 hour tour. Pompeii seems almost impossible without an expert guide and ours was great. The two hours flew by. We spent about 4 hours exploring after the tour but there are very few signs so it’s hard to follow along without somebody who knows what’s what. Audio was fine despite having a group of 20 or so. In small areas it was sometimes a bit hard to follow what was being talked about if we were at the back of the group, but our guide did the best she could given some of the crowded spaces and was great at answering questions.
