Berlin without Potsdam is like Paris without Versailles - leave Berlin without a trip to its royal residence, and you can't say that you've seen it all. Potsdam's fairy-tale landscapes are inviting and playful, and make any walk a delightful experience. The palace of Cecilienhof, built in a country house style from 1914 to 1917, is not only memorable for the Potsdam Conference of 1945, where an American president, a Soviet dictator and a British prime minister sealed the fate of Germany and Europe. It is also the last palace built by the Hohenzollern Dynasty. There you will also see the lakeside Marble Palace with its Greek temple ruins. Another dreamlike spot is Babelsberg castle with its surrounding park. What are an idyllic Russian village, beautiful towers and churches from the Italian Renaissance and an 18th century Dutch town doing here? We will give you historic information on how the old city palace was destroyed at the end of the war. You will cross the bridge where spy swaps took place during the Cold War and see where political opponents of the East German dictatorship were imprisoned. What a day we had in Potsdam with Xavier. He was so enthusiastic and welcoming and knowledgeable about his history. We learned some very important historical events that spanned many eras. It was amazing that our guide could teach us so much history in one day and make it interesting. We could never have covered so much on our own. High marks for Xavier. One of the most welcoming guides we have ever had on a walking trip. Super job! We had an issue when asked to leave the train due to an accident on the tracks. Xavier asked us if we were comfortable walking over 30 minutes to the Bridge of Spies. It all worked out well even though it put quite a delay in our schedule. Xavier alleviated a rather complicated problem very smoothly. He didn’t get flustered which put everyone at ease We were impressed with how much was covered on the day out. Totally worth our time and energy. Our group of ten people was very flexible. which helped to make the day pleasant.

We had a wonderful time in Potsdam with Betty. She spoke marvelous English and had all kinds of interesting stories explaining the Prussian history and the what's and why's of the area palaces and gardens. Be ready to walk on this tour and to have fun listening to the comments!
