Vienna: Walking Tour of the Historic Ringstrasse

2. Vienna: Walking Tour of the Historic Ringstrasse

150 years ago Emperor Francis Josef commissioned the demolition of the city walls. His vision was to create a unique ensemble of public buildings housing cultural things such as the opera, and the theater, as well as museums, universities, the Academy of Fine Arts, parliament, and city hall. A lot of industrialists and bankers took the opportunity to present their wealth and get a title, building amazing oversized palaces. The wide boulevard was lined with trees, and special paths for carriages, riders, and pedestrians were created. Numerous famous artists, architects, and planners were attracted by this project, who came to Vienna from all parts of Europe. Poor people who were also looking for work arrived and worked under incredible conditions. During this walk you will see the most representative part of the Ring, Palais Ephrusi, which was commissioned by the rich Jewish banker family. This family's fate is described in the book "The Hare with the Amber Eyes". You will also encounter the Votive Church, the main building of the University of Vienna, City Hall, Burgtheater, Parliament, Heldenplatz, Museums, Volksgarten, and statues such as of the mayor Liebenberg or Pallas Athene. At the end of this scenic experience, your tour will end next to the Opera House.

We booked this tour for one day. It was sufficient for a deeper insight and the organization for the next vacation days. Were able to use all three routes from the Opernring. The hop-on/hop-off also enabled us to visit the Prater longer.

Vienna is a big place and hard to get around. Using the Hop-On Hop-Off bus was the best way to see almost everything in a few hours and decide which of the many wonderful places we would like to spend more time visiting.

You can get everywhere and visit and see the highlights in peace. Interesting information is provided via headphones during the journey.

An easy way to see Vienna if time is limited. Excellent commentary.

Beautiful city and the audio tour was quite informative
