Full description

They say that sharing a meal is the best way to get to know each other but a walking tour with 4 to 6 foodie stops is even better! The stops include the oldest restaurant in Reykjavik, a legendary hot dog stand, the local's favorite food market if open and one of the top restaurants in Iceland.

This tour samples many different Icelandic dishes; both traditional classics and modern favorites. Your guide knows all the best spots to get the famous Icelandic meat soup (just like mamma makes it), flatkake with smoked lamb, delicious lobster soup, and more yummy treats.

Even try some fermented shark, if you dare. Learn what the Vikings ate and how Icelandic people have survived harsh winters thanks to their special cooking and preserving methods.

The tour runs everyday and you’ll walk around 2.5 kilometers, making plenty of stops along the way. With no more than 12 people on a tour, you’ll be able to ask any questions about Icelandic food and culture, plus make a few new friends. And, you certainly won’t leave feeling hungry.

Meeting point

This tour meets at Ingolfstorg Square in the center of Reykjavik by the two stone high seat pillars (over 2 meters high). The square is at the beginning of Austurstræti (Austurstræti 1) and is squared off by the streets Aðalstræti, Hafnarstræti, Veltusund and Vallarstræti. If you walk down Laugavegur (the main shopping street), please continue until the end. On Ingolfur Square itself, you can see Kvosin, a small grocery market, Citycenter Plaza Hotel, Hlölli (a fast food establishment) and finally a kebab house. It is recommended to use Google Maps as the Icelandic Street names can be tricky.

We made four food stops on the tour and there was plenty of food. We had good local food- fish soup, pickled herring, gravlax, lamb tartare, a hot dog at a very popular stand, fish stew and a tiny taste of shark meat. Our last stop we had beer. It was all very good. The guide was very nice but he said he would be our photographer and forgot to take photos at most places until I reminded him. Other than that it was a great tour.

It was a great experience to go on a tour of the Reykjavík food scene with Asta. Asta explained a lot about the past, culture and Icelandic food. and as she speaks very good German, it was even easier for me to ask many questions. I also liked that she emailed me a recipe for Rye Bread and that "a friend in Reykjavik" even sent me a free e-book with Icelandic recipes a short time later. I can highly recommend the tours booked by ' A Friend in Reykjavik' via GetYourGuide.

We took the food tour April 6. We were lucky to have pretty good weather. Oli was fabulous. His stories of his own childhood in Iceland made the tour extra special. We had a great variety of food that we would not have known to try otherwise. I must admit that I was a wimp and did not try the fermented shark.
