Full description

Join this amazing journey through space and time, entering Pompeii: a unique document of Greco-Roman life.  Begin your journey down the “Highway of the Sun”, passing through the famous Roman countryside, Castelli Romani. Enjoy incredible views of the Mediterranean, Mount Vesuvius, and countless historic sites.

The first stop is in Naples. This Mediterranean city is famous for its rich history, art, culture, and gastronomy. Drive up the Vomero hill for a view over the town which overlooks the bay of Naples and extends from the Sorrento peninsula to the volcanic area of Phlegrean fields. The skyline is dominated by the majestic and still active volcano Vesuvius. This is the perfect spot to take photos of this stunning landmark. Driving down towards the port of Mergellina, travel south towards Mount Vesuvius and the town of Pompeii. After stopping for a traditional Italian lunch, make your way to the UNESCO Archaeological Site of Pompeii with Skip the Line Tickets.

Spend the afternoon exploring this once thriving city that was frozen in time by layers of volcanic ash. Pompeii remained buried under a layer of pumice stones and ash 19 to 23 feet (6 to 7 meters) deep. The city’s sudden burial served to protect it for the next 17 centuries from vandalism, looting, and the destructive effects of climate and heavy weather.  After your tour of Pompeii, resume your trip through the Roman countryside, enjoying the scenery as you leisurely make your way back to Rome. Return in time to enjoy the rest of the night in Rome at your leisure.

Well organised and great for the first visit of Pompeii. In our opinion, the 20 minutes break 5 minutes after one hour lunch break, right after we arrived Pompeii, to go to toilets (even though there were toilets at the restaurant) and the possibility to visit a shop, was not necessary. Those who would like to visit the shop might do it after the guided tour. We got just 20 minutes on our own at Pompeii to visit the museum. A little bit to short time for us.

Alessandro, the overall guide was good. The staff at Greyline office in Rome where great. The lady who met up in Naples was a bit... too much. She talked a lot. A lot. But it was not much of interest in what she said. The talk could easily have been reduced by 75%. Either stayed that way with less information but interesting information. Or, the 75% could have been replaced with some additional interesting information. The tour in Naples was great. The lunch stop was a total waste. Venue and quality of food and service made no sense at all. Why a 3 course lunch that had less quality than a Norhtern European poor Italian restaurant. Would have been much better with a shorter stop for a good Italian sandwich and have more time in Pompeji, or make the stop in Naples a bit longer for some slices of pizza.

Appreciating that it is a long way to go for a day trip (approx 6 hours total travel time), it was a good day. Guide was a little hard to understand in the beggining and there is a bit too much down time but it's a hassle free way to see Pompeii and gain some valuable information as you go.
