Full description

Experience the Battle of Antietam (Battle of Sharpsburg), the first major battle of the American Civil War to be fought on northern soil, with this self-guided driving tour in Sharpsburg. Benefit from the flexibility of a tour via an app that functions as a guide, narrator, and map all in one. Watch animated videos along the way that show you what you can't see, such as snapshots from different centuries or interior rooms.

Begin your tour at the Antietam National Battlefield Visitor Center that features museum exhibits from the battle and the Civil War. From there, simply follow the set route in the app. Drive through the West Woods, a critical natural feature during the battle. Then, pass through the Mumma Farm and Cemetery. See animated videos to visualize what you cannot see, such as snapshots from different centuries or interior rooms. Along the route, stop at the Piper Farm. Learn the history of the simple log cabin that the Pipers lived in. Stop at Burnside's Bridge, a landmark sometimes called “Rohrbach’s Bridge” or “Lower Bridge.” Next, explore the Hawkins’ Zouaves Monument that honors the men of the 9th New York, the unit that nearly succeeded in breaking the final Confederate line. End your tour by learning about the Antietam National Cemetery. Take away new knowledge of the bloody battle and sacrifices made at the Antietam National Battlefield. Enrich your experience with a tour developed by local guides, creative writers, and professional voice artists.
