    The Aeolian Islands are a fascinating volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily. They are named after Aeolus, the demigod of the winds.  Lipari is the biggest, most populated Aeolian Island and has historically been the most significant. Lipari offers a grand archaeological museum housed in the buildings around the Duomo. Also impressive are the white shiny pumice quarries, which, overlooking the sea, give the water an amazing turquoise hue. Vulcano, which gives its name to all volcanoes, is particularly famous for its sulfurous mud baths and its smoking main crater. A man named Stevenson lived on Vulcano until the last major eruption in 1888. He never returned although his villa is still visible and intact. The tour departs from Taormina by bus to Milazzo harbour on the North coast of Sicily then continues by private boat to Lipari. In Lipari there is plenty of time to visit the old town center, to see the interesting archaeological park or simply shop for souvenirs. Guests then transfer by boat to the island of Vulcano for a second stop. Here there is the possibility to swim in the warm sulphureous seawater, have a mud bath, or enjoy the beach and have a delicious lunch (optional). On the way back, the tour follows the coastline to see the Faraglioni Rocks, the Horse Cave and the Mermaid's Rock.

    Very interesting visit to two Aeolian islands with a very professional and friendly guide. Also the crossing with the boat was very interesting because on the way back from the islands we passed next to other islands and rocks in the sea with the very interesting comments of the guides.

    Everything was great, but unfortunately the sulfur bath wasn't possible, it was closed. It would be better to have more time for such a beautiful tour, for example climbing up the island of Vulcano where the crater is. Nonetheless, it was a very nice experience. Our guide spoke German and apart from me and my husband there was only one other couple from Germany. Thanks.

    This was a wonderful trip. We went on August 5, leaving early morning from Taormina. The tour guide on the bus was excellent. She also made some of the announcements on the boat. She spoke English, German and Italian and took good care of us. The islands are beautiful and the boat tour around Vulcano and Lipari before disembarking was especially amazing. We took the 10 Euro bus/taxi tours around both islands and got to see some beautiful places. The drive around Lipari even allowed for a brief, 20 minute swim at a beach on the north of the island. Both of the bus/taxi excursions around the islands were in Italian, and we do not understand the language, but it was still worthwhile for us. I highly recommend this experience.
