Tbilisi's Brutalist Reality

1. Tbilisi's Brutalist Reality

Meet your guide either at your hotel or a central location that is convenient for you and embark on your walking tour. Head to the Ministry of Highways of the Georgian SSR, which is a unique monument of Brutalist architecture. Then visit Georgian Stonehenge, a giant monumental building on the shores of the Tbilisi Sea. The Nutsubidze skybridge was built in the last century. What is its uniqueness? The three apartment blocks are connected by a bridge that goes through them. From the sky bridge, you can also see a nice view of the residential parts of Tbilisi. Then visit the so-called suicide bridge. The bridge is located above the river Vera and City Hall tries to decorate it but the story does not change. You will have the opportunity to ride in the old cable car. Next, explore the Former Museum of Archeology and its underground, which is now an abandoned building.

Tbilisi: City and Backstreets Alternative Walking Tour

2. Tbilisi: City and Backstreets Alternative Walking Tour

Since the 19th century, Tbilisi began to grow and develop rapidly. The centre went beyond the boundaries of the "old Asian city". The left bank of the Mtkvari River began to be actively developed, filling the streets with new architecture, fashionable shops, factories and immigrants from Europe and Russia. Bourgeois New Tiflis has become a symbol of change. Traditions intertwined with the spirit of the era and created a unique image of the capital of Georgia. From Freedom square, we will head through Orbeliani plaza to the city's left bank. We will wander between the rows of the Dry Bridge flea market, looking for past treasures of the past. Then look at the pedestrian area of Agmashenebeli Avenue, go to the famous Fabrika and finally reach Marjanishvili square through backstreets and beautiful gardens.

The tour was about five hours long and was half driving, half walking. We were driven from one sight to the next and got out each time, got an explanation and had enough time to take pictures and explore. Our favorite sight was the “stonehenge” on top of a hill. It is an incredibly photogenic sight, and hardly any people are there. Super cool! The tour really gives you a good look at the real life in Tbilisi, away from the tourist hot spots. Very educational and interesting for people who are interested in soviet architecture and getting off the besten path. Our guides were Alex and Alexiv, both very nice guys who were polite, patient and spoke english very well.

This was an excellent tour, and a wonderful way to see another side of Tbilisi. Our tour guide, Khatuna was brilliant - friendly and welcoming, and full of knowledge and good humour, and it really was a privilege to take this tour with her. It also gives a deeper perspective on Tbilisi to exploring some of its concrete wonders from Soviet times, and discover unexpected beauty and discover more about the lives of Tbilisi citizens through this period. Though not concrete, the Chronicles of Georgia monument really is spectacular, and is well worth being shown around by someone so knowledgeable as our brilliant guide for the morning.

The tour is highly recommended. We went with an air-conditioned car to a very good selection of brutalist (Soviet) buildings in Tbilisi. We explored the places interactively and received really interesting information. Both our guide and driver were knowledgeable and friendly. There was always time to answer individual questions and snap exciting photos. TOP TOUR!

Alex and Alexo picked us up from our hotel and took us to many fascinating 'off the beaten track' places. They were very knowledgeable and we learned plenty during the tour.
