  • From Prague: Terezin Concentration Camp Private Tour

    1. From Prague: Terezin Concentration Camp Private Tour

During this tour you will learn about World War II and its impacts on former Czechoslovakia. Terezín is the name of a former military fortress and garrison town. In the late 18th century the Habsburg Monarchy erected the fortress as a stronghold against the Prussians from the North. They named it after Empress Maria Theresa. Terezín´s most tragic chapter came during WWII (1939-45). In 1940 Prague's Gestapo installed the Minor Fortress police prison. About 32,000 prisoners passed through the Minor Fortress between 1940 and 1945, of whom 2,500 were killed by hunger, disease, tyrannical guards and executions. In 1941 the town of Terezín was changed by the Nazis into a Jewish ghetto-transit camp. Until the end of the war more than 150,000 deportees passed through the camp, 35,000 of whom died there. Russian forces liberated Terezín on May 10, 1945, 8 days after Berlin had fallen to the Alli...

Our tour guide Prem made all the difference in an otherwise sad and difficult tour. He loves his job, but loves history even more. He is very knowledgeable of the history of his country and Eastern Europe. He is articulate, educated, very interesting and well travelled. He answered our questions without hesitation and was extremely patient. He was a safe driver and on time.

    2. From Prague: Private Tour to Terezin with Guide and Car

Learn about the history of Terezin on the 45-minute drive north of Prague. The tour begins at the cemetery, where you'll learn about who was buried there and for what reason, as well as the significance of the cross and Star of David. A local guide will take you through the memorial of the Small Fortress which was used as a prison before and during WWII, mostly to house fighters of the Czech resistance. You'll visit the barracks, the wash rooms, the prison cells, and other places where the prisoners lived.  After the fortress, you'll experience the difficult history of Terezin's Jewish ghetto. Each building had a different purpose in regulating Jewish movements. Visit the local museum to learn about political developments before the war and everyday life in the ghetto. The last stop is the cemetery and the crematorium (closed on Saturdays).

  • From Prague: Terezin Former Concentration Camp Private Tour

    3. From Prague: Terezin Former Concentration Camp Private Tour

On this half-day trip to the former ghetto, concentration camp and gestapo prison just 1-hour from Prague, you will focus on Czech-Jewish history, World War II and the Holocaust. Located in a sleepy town in the Bohemian countryside, this former ghetto and concentration camp is a lasting reminder of the Jewish tragedy of World War II. You will be guided through the Museum of Holocaust and Secret Synagogue, where services secretly took place during the Ghetto period, the Jewish cemetery and the crematorium. You will also visit the Small Fortress, a former political and Prague Gestapo prison during World War ll. This contrasts with the courageous resilience of the prisoners. Defying the most dire conditions, the Jewish people maintained a rich cultural and religious life, held celebrations, even composed and staged operas. Terezín epitomizes the worst aspects of the human spirit but its p...

Interesting tour with an exceptional guide. We did this tour with George, an educated, kind and very helpful person. The passion for this work prevailed over the time available. The expected time was 6 hours but he dedicated more than 8. He made us visit the places explaining everything in detail. Thanks George, see you soon!

Competent, friendly guide; it was an extremely informative day.

We were looked after by our guide Michael on this tour in a very friendly and extremely competent manner. He responded to all questions and requests on our part and so it was an impressive experience to visit this place with its dark history. Would we do it again - highly recommended.
