The oldest building is St Benet's church which dates from the early 11th century and was built by the Saxon townspeople. On the ceiling of the famous Royal Air Force bar are the serial numbers of 123 squadrons written in candle light by young airmen in World War II. Nearby is the Old Cavendish Laboratory, where Cambridge scientists changed our understanding of the physical world and pushed the boundaries of our knowledge. They all have their stories, traditions, and famous names. Several colleges allow visitors to enter their grounds and buildings, though there is often an entry fee. Only Cambridge Green Badge guides are allowed to take groups inside these colleges.
