Full description
The tour will start from either Shinjuku or Ueno in downtown Tokyo. Relax on an air-conditioned bus and climb up the thrilling 48 turns of Irohazaka slope. Your first tour destination is the breathtaking Kegon Falls, at around 100 meters high, which is one of the top three waterfalls in Japan. Follow the stream to the scenic Lake Chuzenji to have about an hour for a delicious lunch at Hitachi-ya, one of the best restaurants in the area with a gorgeous view of the lake. During Autumn, you can take some stunning pictures of the seasonal colors with the lake in the background.  After lunch, move on to the holy sites of the city, the UNESCO heritage Nikko Toshogu Shrine and Futara-san Shrine. Toshogu Shrine is the final resting place of General Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate who ruled Japan for over 250 years before Emperor Meiji. Ieyasu is enshrined at Toshogu as the deity Tosho Daigongen, Great Deity of the East Shining Light. Be amazed by the masterpiece mixture of Japanese spirits with ancient Oriental building designs.  Futarasan Shrine is dedicated to the deities of Nikko's three most sacred mountains, Mount Nantai, Mount Nyoho, and Mount Taro. Futarasan is an alternate name for Mount Nantai, the most prominent of the three mountains. Enjoy the beauty of the golden details of the main hall in the shrine, while being surrounded by astonishing autumn colors. Return to Shinjuku at around 6:50 PM. Please note there is only one drop-off point at the end of the tour, Near Shinjuku Station (west exit). This is also the case for customers who chose the Ueno departure location.

This visit could be shorter. We spend too much time in each place, especially by the lake. The restaurant is disappointing. The guide is very kind and very helpful. Too bad the visit to the sanctuary does not include a guide. We visit alone. The transport car in Nikko is very comfortable.

I value the tour in a positive way for the end and not for the environment, for the landscapes, visual and sensory quality that is breathed in the sanctuary and that, accompanied by the lake that adds to the visit, make it magical and deserves to visit the zone. It is clear that transportation is necessary to get from one point to another. Of course, the accompaniment of the guide was practically nil. I was more of a cheerleader on the bus route than a guide in the visits. You leave Nikko without knowing in depth its details. A pity, really.

After booking our trip online, we were sent an email on when the car would pick us up at our condo. We booked a private car and it was worth every penny. Our driver Chizihu (Luann) was a very polite, a good driver and would let us know at each stop how long we had and where she would be waiting for us. She even stopped in Nikko so we could get a coffee for the trip back. It was so nice not to be herded with a large group of people especially going up to Nikko during the Fall.
