  • Trieste: 2.5-Hour Prosecco Origins Tour and Tastings

    2. Trieste: 2.5-Hour Prosecco Origins Tour and Tastings

Hidden in a corner of north-eastern Italy overlooking the Gulf of Trieste, find the old villages of Contovello and Prosecco for the chance to learn about the origins of Prosecco wine.  Start with a walking tour with your experienced local host through the narrow streets and hidden passages in the historic village of Contovello, once home to a castle with a tower overlooking the city of Trieste and its gulf. Visit a vineyard, walking down the ancient green terraced vineyards overlooking the sea, a unique feature of this incredible land and an example of heroic agriculture. As you stop for a break to enjoy the views and the crisp fresh air coming from the sea, have the chance to taste boards of farmhouse-sourced regional homemade cheese, cured meats and local delicacies, including a selection of traditional sparkling wines.

We loved the evening with Katrin! It was super cosy, interesting and non-touristy, which we enjoyed a lot. Got to taste great locally produced proseccos along with a nice plate of locally produced meat and cheese. It was enjoyable to see Katrin's enthusiasm for her family's heritage (the vineyard) and to be able to ask lots of questions :-)! Would totally recommend the tour! To get there, we took the ferry from Triest to Grignano, walked around Miramare castle, spent a few hours relaxing at a beach close to Miramare castle and then walked up the steps to meet Katrin. The walk up took about 45 minutes and was super nice too as it's a bit hidden (though a bit of exercise :-)). Google Maps doesn't show you the route up but other hiking apps like "komoot" do. To go back it's best to buy bus tickets beforehand and then take the bus to Trieste.

  • From Trieste: Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle

    3. From Trieste: Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle

Postojna Cave, the queen of all caves, is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world’s largest karst (limestone) monuments. This is the only place in the world where the underground landscape can be traversed on an electric train and where you get to meet this underground kingdom’s most famous inhabitant – the proteus (olm) – up close. A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, astonishing diversity of karst features, as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for the popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors (more than 36 million of them in over 200 years). The Predjama Castle reigns over the surrounding area, not far from the Postojna Cave, in the idyllic village of Predjama. This picturesque, magnificent, defiant, mysterious, and impregnable castle has been perched up in the midd...

Really special experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of extra information about Slovenia too. Thank you!

During your walk, especially when you're near Piazza Cavana, don't forget to take a look at the beautiful historical buildings all around you, from the fruit markets to the craft f...

The cave experience was wonderful, but be prepared to climb many steps. Once the tour is done, there are 200 steps back up to the parking lot, so make sure you have comfortable shoes! Also, no photos are allowed, so don’t bother to bring a heavy camera. We also toured the Lipica stud farms. They let you pet the horses, unlike the tour in Vienna. There was also a show which our ticket did not cover. I don’t know if that would be an option for those interested, but it would extend your day by an hour or two.
