Full description
Board your comfortable catamaran in the Tromsø city center. As you sail you’ll learn about Norway’s wildlife, fishing, aquaculture, local villages, and weather from your knowledgable guide. Marvel at the Arctic landscape and the beautiful fjords. Take photos from either the indoor or outdoor viewing decks. Enjoy hot coffee or tea, as admire the unique natural setting. If you’re still hungry, there is a kiosk on board to purchase hot expedition meals, snacks, and cold drinks. Late October to late January is when some of the world’s biggest mammals visit the coast outside Tromsø to feed on herrings. During this period you’ll have the highest possibility of seeing a humpback whale, killer whale (orca), or harbor porpoise. You might even get really lucky and see a fin whale. Once you reach the whale feeding site, you’ll have 1-1.5 hours to take a close-up look at the feast. Keep in mind that the weather in the arctic can be rough some days. If you think you might get seasick, please bring sea-sickness medicine with you and take it half an hour before the trip starts.

The trip was a wonderful experience. It was just two of us plus the guide and the captain in the boat M/S Leone. Our guide Eduard and the captain were super nice. Although we could not see any whales, we saw a seal, an eagle and different kinds of ducks. Upon our request, they let us fish even though fishing was not part of the package and my boyfriend caught lots of codfish. Our captain also taught us how to fillet cod and he even fried it on board for us. We could not have asked for more. Of course it would have been even better if we had seen a whale but, in my opinion, that was mostly dependant on luck and season so, we had prior understanding for that. It was a day well spent with wonderful people, warm hot cocoa and wonderful scenery.

It was a beautiful experience. I can only recommend it. The only thing you have to have in mind is that you might not see wild animals (we didn't) and, if you can't deal with the occasional big waves, that you get seasick and ruin your journey. But in general was a beautiful scenery and was worth it. The staff friendly and there is coffee, tea, biscuits and really warm full-bodied Nordic jackets/uniforms.

I was on a trip on January 19. Importantly, it was nice / sunny weather. It didn't rock too much. Which was probably important for the entire reception of the trip. I did not count on seeing a whale because they are generally present in this sea until mid-January. However, you managed to spot them, in fact (unless you buy a small boat) you can only see the humpback tail diving in the distance. However, I appreciate the whole trip positively, if only for admiring the fjords.
