Vienna: Secrets of the Fiaker & Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride

1. Vienna: Secrets of the Fiaker & Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride

Peek into the unknown world of Fiakerei (horse-drawn carriage driving). Who are the Fiakers? Where did they come from? And most importantly, where are they going in the evening after work? Get to the bottom of these secrets, and many more, by visiting the original Viennese Fiaker horse stable. For the first time, you'll have the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of the traditional two teams of "Lohnkutchen" (the original horse-drawn taxi!) Explore the unique Fiaker Horse Center in Vienna's 11th district of Simmering. An exclusive barn tour will give you insight into what's going on in a traditional Viennese Fiaker family business. Then, take a ride in an original Viennese Fiaker - the ubiquitous passenger transport of the 18th century - back to the city before the work of the Fiaker starts. During the carriage ride, you'll pass through the up-and-coming St. Marx district, heading to the city centre via the famous Ringstraße. You'll be dropped off at Michaelerplatz in the city center, a perfect place to continue your exploration of all of Vienna's top sites.

Vienna: Guided Kayaking Tour

2. Vienna: Guided Kayaking Tour

Discover the most quaint part of Vienna, the Alte Donau; a lakeside village which was cut off from the main channel of the Danube in 1870. This is where nocturnal beavers now roam in a section of the river. See how Vienna maintains its long-established reputation as a center for diplomacy, politics, and international relations as you paddle past the United Nations, along with several of the city’s other most important contemporary buildings. This view of the city is later contrasted with the cute lakeside huts which adorn the water’s edge to give vibrant bursts of color to the lakeshore. You will most likely be sharing the water with local rowers, the odd fisherman, and plenty of swans and ducks along the way. The Alte Donau is a watery oasis in the middle of the city, perfectly designed for further investigation via kayak. If it's hot, you can also take a break for a swim in the clean lake waters while making new friends, getting some sunshine, and being active. You'll also get loads of tips from the guide if you want to keep investigating ‘new’ Vienna for a bit longer. You could grab lunch or a cocktail at Vienna’s self-styled ‘Copa Beach’, swim off one of the island’s riverside pontoons, visit the Danube Tower with its 360° views over Vienna’s skyline, or explore the charming Danube Park, all within walking distance from the end point.

Pedal through the beautiful vineyards and get the most spectacular view of Vienna from the top. Then, cycle through the woods on the downhill ride to reach the banks of the majestic River Danube and Danube Island. Enjoy a traditional snack of bratwurst and a radler (lager shandy) before riding through Prater park.

Vienna 3-Hour Hiking Tour of Wiener Wald

4. Vienna 3-Hour Hiking Tour of Wiener Wald

Hike the most accessible parts of the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald) on the "house mountains" of Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg, visible from many parts of the city and both within the administrative boundaries of Vienna. After you’ve met your hiking guide, walk a rather steep but paved footpath until you reach the top of Leopoldsberg, from where you'll have panoramic views over Vienna and the majestic Klosterneuburg Monastery. Continue on a comfortable path through the forest to Kahlenberg hill, before a hilly descent among hillside vineyards to end at Grinzing, Vienna's best-known wine village, lined with rustic restaurants. Go to Heuriger, where the wine owners of the region sell their wine, and purchase a bottle or two to enjoy later!

Little bit of a trek from Simmering station through a less salubrious area of Vienna (thought we'd got lost) but thankfully Google maps directed us to find the stables. Our host was very knowledgeable and talked through the bloodlines of the horses, the regulation surrounding the carriages horses and the horses welfare. We then had a lovely long carriage ride into the city. we didn't see many of the sights and the carriage driver didn't explain/talk through the journey.

I have to say we were skeptical at first. But completely wrong, the fiakers have an incredibly great bond with every horse. Handling is heartwarming. Anyone traveling through Vienna in a carriage should first learn about the history of the Fiakers. It was incredibly instructive and has positively changed my biood regarding carriage rides. Super nice team! Keep it up :)

The tour of the stable was competent and very very interesting. We could see everything, ask questions and the love and care for the horses was clearly noticeable. I was particularly impressed by all the rules that a carriage company has to comply with to protect the horses and which are also observed.

I can only warmly recommend everyone to take part in this tour. You get a great insight behind the scenes, learn a lot of interesting things and questions are answered in detail. Many thanks to Chris, who led our tour and then drove us into town in the carriage. :)

A wonderful tour and rise into the city!!!! Very enjoyable!!!
