Padua to Venice Boat Cruise of the Brenta Riviera

1. Padua to Venice Boat Cruise of the Brenta Riviera

In ancient times, Padua and Venice were connected by typical river boats called Burchiello®. The wooden boats featured elegant cabins and 3 or 4 balconies and were driven by the wind or oars, before being drawn by horses from Fusina to Padua. Recreate this journey on a full-day mini cruise from the heart of Padua to Venice San Marco. Departing from the historical Burchiello® Stairway at Portello, you will cruise along the original course of the 18th-century Venetian Burchielli, passing the gorgeous Villa Giovanelli at Noventa Padovana. Relax on board the luxury boat, with open-air deck to soak up the views. Disembark at Stra for a guided tour of Villa Pisani's gardens, the greatest gardens of the Brenta Riviera. Marvel at its impressive swimming pool, the grandiose stables and the elegant eighteenth-century Coffee House. Continue towards Dolo, enjoying historic illustrations of the different villas seen from the river. Pass through Dolo Lock and on towards Mira. Just past Mira Lock you will stop at Villa Widmann for a guided tour of the 18th-century mansion that belonged to a noble family of Persian origin. Cruise to Oriago, where you will stop for lunch in the historic Il Burchiello Restaurant. Next, navigate to Malcontenta, cruising past villas, villages and swing bridges. Upon arrival in Malcontenta, stop to explore one last villa; the regal Villa Foscari. Located on the edge of the lagoon, it was within easy access of Venice for its powerful Venetian owner. Finally, cruise through the Moranzani Lock to journey across the lagoon, and dock at San Marco Riva degli Schiavoni at the “Pontile della Pietà” landing stage.

The guide was waiting near the entrance to where you embark the boat. I could easily have missed the trip as she was not easily identifiable and I was waiting right in front of the church. Everyone chose to sit upstairs as it was a lovely day. Be warned though, despite it being only mid April it was still very hot in the open. The locks were interesting to traverse. It would have been nice to know what was being offered in the restaurant recommended by the guide. I chose to eat lunch independently in a small restaurant on the opposite side of the river. There was plenty of time to take photos whilst the guide explained to the diverse group in their native tinge. At the last stop I left my bag on the bus. Unfortunately there was an accident and the bus was delayed by 50mins reaching us at our pick up point. The train back to Venice from Padova was cheap and easy.

A delightful day out

The boat trip is a great way to spend a day. Very relaxing with a good mix of visits to villas, enjoying the process of the locks and the bridges along the way and capped off by the spectacular entrance to Venice. Highly recommended

The cruise was very well organised and all went smoothly. Francesca was a great guide with an extraordinary facility in several languages and went out of her way to assist in any way requested. Well done!

Very special and original. Brave the escorts. Getting to Venice from the lagoon is priceless

The navigation with swing bridges and many locks is very useful and interesting
