Full description
Experience an informative and impressive tour of the Warsaw Ghetto. The topic of this tour is the history of the establishment and liquidation of the largest ghetto in Europe. In 1940 the Nazis established the ghetto in the heart of Warsaw. Over 400,000 Jews from Warsaw and the surrounding area were crammed in an area of 4 square kilometers. 100,000 people died here from exhaustion, hunger, and disease and more than 300,000 were killed in Treblinka extermination camp. As a result of the attempt to completely liquidate the ghetto, an uprising broke out in 1943. The unequal struggle between the rebels against the armed German troops lasted nearly one month. In revenge, the Nazis completely destroyed the ghetto. It was survived by only a few Jews including Władysław Szpilman, the hero of the movie “The Pianist” by Roman Polanski. Before the Second World War, the second largest Jewish community lived in Warsaw, making up 30 percent of the entire city population. Within less than 3 years, the Jewish community no longer existed in Warsaw. During this 3-hour tour you will explore the real places and hear authentic stories. Discover fragments of the ghetto walls, the last street of the ghetto, and neighborhoods that were located within the ghetto. Visit the only synagogue that survived the Second World War and is still in operation. Find out where the supposed logic of destruction came from and how the plan of the final solution was put into action. Learn about everyday life in the ghetto, why the Jews took up arms, and who helped them. Discover the symbolism of the Umschlagplatz (collection point) and the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes. Although the ghetto has no longer existed for a long time, its history needs to be told.

I spent several weeks visiting WWII sites throughout Eastern Europe, and my tour by Mary through the Warsaw ghetto was by far the best one I had the privilege of going on. I have an extremely in depth knowledge of the Holocaust, and ended up canceling several guided tours in various other cities because it was more efficient to visit the sites on my own, however this tour is one I would absolutely recommend attending. There is no way you could find all the historical sites throughout the ghetto on your own, and Mary is incredibly knowledgeable. She had photos of various important sites before and during the war, so we could better imagine what we were looking at. She also was an invaluable resource on the history of the few surviving buildings within the ghetto subsequent to the war, which I would never have been able to figure out on my own. I cannot say enough positive things about my tour with Mary, it was simply the educational highlight of my entire trip. Thank you Mary!

Mary was excellent. She guided us through sites of the former ghetto and despite the volume of information narrated very well the history and kept us captivated the entire tour. Her tour is very thorough and was so interesting that it felt like we had only been together for an hour after 3 hours of walking talking and visiting the different sites. I highly recommend this tour with Mary

Mary was an excellent guide who was both patient and knowledgeable in answering all my questions on Jews, their background, reasons for oppression as well as all the horrors they went through during the holocaust. I would highly recommend this trip and Mary to anyone who is considering a private tour and the opportunity to satisfy all your queries.
