4. Cape Town: Half-Day Guided Township Tour

Traveling is only as deep as the people you interact with, and on this half-day tour, you will get to discover Cape Town in an up-close and personal way through the eyes of the locals. During your time together, you will have a chance to dig deeper into the multicultural side of Cape Town, and hear their personal stories of forceful removals from District Six to the rich cultural landscape of township life. The day either begins at 08.00 or at 13.00, returning approximately four-and-a-half hours later. You will begin in District Six with the Museum (closed Sundays). Here you can educate yourself on the forceful removal of over 60,000 inhabitants in the 1970s by the apartheid regime. This once lively community of former slaves, artisans and merchants was once home to almost 1/10 of the city of Cape Town's population before the brutality that came. After your education, you will move to Langa, the oldest formal township in South Africa. This suburb was established in 1927, and was established specifically for Black Africans before the apartheid era. There is a history of violent uprisings here, and your visit will be benefited with the local's stories and perspectives. From here we move onto Shebeen (township pub) with the option to taste some traditional beer! How can you turn down a beer with the locals? Finally we move to Khayelitsha - the largest and fastest growing township in South Africa today. Its local name is Xhosa, which means New Home. Here you will get to meet with some of the township entrepreneurs who are breathing new life in to these historic towns. If you're fortunate enough to be with us on a Sunday, we'll even have the chance to visit a charismatic church service in the townships! It's truly an experience not to be missed!

The tour guide was funny, the coach was very comfortable. The first vineyard was the best!!! Enjoy the wine and chocolate pairing! The wine connoisseur was informed and very enthusiastic… at some point I even wanted to be a wine connoisseur. Absolutely incredible, the Rhebokskloof vineyard! The drive through the Cape Wine Lands was beautiful!

We had a really nice experience with Sam as a tour guide for the township tour. He could tell us a lot about the historical backgrounds of the township and current developments. The highlight of the tour was that he made it possible for us to spontaneously visit a shack from the inside. I would definitely recommend a tour with him!

Wine Flies does the best tours I would bet on that. Our guide, Etienne was well versed with the history, the wines, the wine makers and the entire region. He was super friendly and made our tour that much more interesting. I would highly recommend this tour. You get to enjoy both the Franschoek and Stellenbosch.

Brilliant bike tour around Stellenbosch and to 2 beautiful winery estates. Sevo was a fantastic guide and really good to chat to. He had lots of interesting knowledge and made the tour really interesting. Tasty wine and chocolates too!

A great tour! I was picked up from the apartment on time and had a great morning with the tour guides. I definitely recommend this tour. Big thank you! :-)
