Zadar: Private Walking Tour Through 3,000 Years of History

2. Zadar: Private Walking Tour Through 3,000 Years of History

Zadar represents one of the most interesting and oldest urban localities in the Mediterranean, constantly inhabited from 1000 BC. In the 1st century it became a Roman colony and acquired the characteristics of a city. You will visit remains of a Roman Forum, the biggest one built in Croatia and the center of social life at the time. Zadar was the capital of Dalmatia region from the fall of the Western Roman Empire until the end of the First World War. Hear the story of its defensive walls that the Venetian Republic built in the 16th century for protection against the Ottomans and see the picturesque port of Fosa with its beautiful Land Gate. You will walk the famous Kalelarga, the main and most famous street in the city. Stand in front of the church of St. Donat, the symbol of Zadar and see Zadar Cathedral dedicated to St. Anastasia. Zadar is famous for its Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun art installations situated at the Riva promenade. You will listen to the unique music of the sea played by the Sea Organ while learning the most interesting facts about these modern installations. Next, taste maraschino cherry liqueur, the recipe of which dates from the 16th century.

Split: Day-Trip to Zadar

3. Split: Day-Trip to Zadar

A historic old town of Roman ruins, medieval churches, cosmopolitan cafes and quality museums set on a small peninsula, Zadar is certainly an intriguing city. It’s not too crowded, it’s not overrun with tourists and its two unique attractions, the sound-and-light spectacle of the Sea Organ and the Sun Salutation, need to be seen and heard to be believed. This mix of ancient relics, Habsburg elegance, coastal setting and unsightly tower blocks is what gives Zadar so much character. It's no Dubrovnik, but it's not a museum town either. This is a living, vibrant city, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The organ looks like a series of broad steps leading down into the water, but there's actually very clever engineering hiding under the surface. The lower steps allow water and air to flow in. That water and air is then funneled into resonant chambers under the steps, and pushed out through the channels on the upper stairs, seen here. These cause the undulating, chime-like notes to be produced. Because the sea is always shifting and changing, the sea organ never sounds exactly the same twice, with each sound you hear being completely unique.

As expected! Guide speaks great German. We had a dog with us. Wasn't a problem at all. The guide waited patiently when we gave him something to drink or similar. She was also able to answer all questions about Croatia wonderfully. For example why one goes through Bosnia-H. have to drive to get to Dubrovnik... Really worth it! Zadar is really a great city!
